MSPs Told to Cut Back on Postage Costs

Free-spending MSPs have been ordered to slash the amount of tax-payers cash they spend on sending propaganda to constituents. Holyrood bosses sent out warning letters after politicans racked up an annual bill of almost £500000 on postage and stationery.
Top of the list was South of Scotland Nationalist MSP Christine Grahame, who spent £26465. Until now, MSPs have been allowed to spend as much as they want on post and office supplies, with bills settled out of a central fund. But at the beginning of this month, parliment chiefs introduced an individual limit of £5500 after several MSPs ran up five-figure bills ahead of the last Holyrood election in 2007.

Allied Irish Banks said it would need to shore up its capital strength by another £1.3 billion on top of the existing plans for a multi-billion government bail-out. The group said it would be looking at asset sales to raise cash after talks with the Irish government determined the current £3.1 billion state rescue would not be enoug.
