Measures of Second Budget
In his second Budget, Mr. Darling will temper his news of future spending cuts and tax rises with confidence about the upturn. The measures will include:
£300 million for existing and new council homes to better insulated; £200 million to help UK to make better use of its island status by pushing the growth of wind turbines, hydro-electric power and other renewable energy technologies; a move to kickstart the housing market by offering to underwrite £50 billion worth of new mortgage-backed assets to bring the secritised home loans market back to life; £2 billion to help the jobless; a boost to North Sea oil companies through tax incentives to explore old or inaccessible fields; a “scrappage” scheme under which motorists would be given an incentive of up to £2000 to buy a new car.

Airline Probe Launched
The European Commission has launched an anti-trust investigation into seven airlines, accusing them of co-operating too closely on commerical, marketing and operational activities.
Two seperate inquires have started, one into the relationship between Star Alliance members Air Canada, Lufthansa, Continental and United Airlines. The other concerns One World’s American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia.

Bowling Group Report Further Sales Plunge
UK’s biggest ten pin bowling group, Georgica, reported a further plunge in sales as consumer spending fell. The owner of Ten pin bowling centres said like-foe-like sales sales fell £1.7 million to £17 million in the 13 weeks to March 29, a fall of 9 per cent, with trading also hit by a late Easter.
Part-Privatise the Royal Mail
A report said that the government will lose hundreds of millions of pounds on its controversial plan to part-privatise the Royal Mail due to the timing of the scheme.
Pressure Group Compass said a 49 per cent sale based on this year’s profits would net the treasury £1 billion down from £1.9 billion a year ago.
