Just in time for the summer, Lloyds Banking Group looks set to pump a welcome holiday spending windfall into millions of homes. Those of the near-three million shareholders in Lloyds who decide not to take up their entitlement in the latest share offer will receive cash bung. On present share price performance, it could amount to £300 per investor.
No one could blame small investors for sitting out this latest £4 billion share issue. there has been one disastrous capital-raising by Lloyds and two by its takeover partner HBOS in the past year and it is quite likely to be a case of thrice bitten, four times shy.
But Lloyds should be applauded for tweaking the placing and open offer so that it has the effect of a rights issue—enabling shareholders to do nothing and still be compensated due to the huge discount at which the offer is priced. In buying HBOS, Lloyds may have been reponsible for the biggest deal turkey in British history, but it has done a small service for popular capitalism.
