Chief executive of the international broker Icap–Michael Spencer, saw his pay package fall by a quarter last year after a cut in his annual bonus. The total pay of Mr Spencer, the Conservative Party Treasurer, fell from £9.1 million to £6.7 million in the year to March, of which £4.75 million was a bonus, which is down from £7.7 million.

As many as 600 contractors gathered outside the Lindsey oil refinery in Lincolnshire in protest at planned job cuts while about 1200 refused to work.
