ISA Savers Lose Out on £3 Billion
A customer group claim that the ISA customers are missing out on up to £3 billion of interest due to the way the market operates, as it makes a supercomplaint against providers.
According to Consumer Focus, the strong rates lure in savers but these are typically cut after the first year, leaving people with uncompetitive long-term returns. Savers also face unfair onstacles when transferring their accounts, due to poor and bureaucratic processes. The Office of Fair Trading will have 90 days to respond to the complaint.
Ofcom May Relax Advert Time Rules
ITV, Channel 4 and five could be allowed to limit the number of adverts they show in a bid to increase earnings. The commercial channels, which suffered large revenue slumps in 2009, are currently obliged to sell an average of seven minutes of airtime each hour, up to a maximum of 12 minutes of airtime each hour, up to a maximum of 12 minutes.
But regulator Ofcom confirmed it is to launch a consultation over its suggestion that this requirement be scrapped. When Ofcom last reviewed the requirements it found that ITV1, Channel 4 and five had the potential to withhould advertising airtime in order to increase prices.
Smart Meters in 2m Homes Plan
In a move to cut the bills by £1 billion over ten years, British Gas is to put smart meters into two million homes. The roll-out over the next 18 months will create about 2600 jobs and spell the end of estimated readings, saving customers significant acounts.
Smart meters will encourage people to cut their power use by showing householders how much energy they are using in real time. They will also give details of carbon emissions and price. Power companies are able to take readings remotely, thus spelling the end of estimated billing.
