People who thinks that the stock market has put the worst of the credit crunch behind it should look at the construction equipment hire group—Ashtead.
The company said that its profits for 2009-10 were likely to fall short of expectations as a lack of building work in the US and in the UK had forced it to cut its rental charges by a quarter in February, March and April. It shares fell by 14.5p, or 22%, to 49.75p.
The warning came only a week after Ashtead’s American rival—United Rentals annoucing that it had sufferedd a similar plunge in rental rates because of the crisis in the construction industry.

Investment Banking Boosts HSBC Figures

Record profits from investment banking helped HSBC to a resilient first quarter, despite rising bad debts in other parts of the bank.
In a trading statement, it is indicated that the Global Banking and Markets division jsut had its best ever quarter. It suggests that the banking group must have made well over $1.5 billion in the three months to March. Pre-tax profits for the whole of HSBC for the period were up on the previous quarter, but down year-on-year.
